You’ve probably heard that the kitchen is the “center of the home”. While it may not necessarily be the physical center, it is one of those rooms where people tend to enjoy gathering. Think about how many times you have been to a party where you’ve spent most of the time in the kitchen.
Is your kitchen designed the way you want it? The pros at Handy Men and Mrs. Helper Kitchen and Bath are here to take your dreams and turn them into reality. Here are a few things to consider when preparing to design your dream kitchen.
Determine the function of the space
While this may sound silly, the first thing you must do is determine the purpose you wish your kitchen to serve. While the primary purpose would obviously be cooking, think about other ways you may use the space. Some of the questions you may want to ask yourself are:
- How do I plan to use the space on a daily basis?
- What activities besides cooking do I expect to do in the kitchen?
- Do I enjoy entertaining?
- How much seating do I need?
Make sure that you have enough counter space
Give some thought to how much cooking/baking you do. If you do a lot, you’ll want to have adequate counter space to work with. You will also want to give some thought to the amount of counter space you have near your appliances. You’ll want at least 15 inches near your fridge and stove to place items that you’re cooking or storing. You will also want to make sure you have adequate counter space near your toaster and microwave.
Maximize the efficiency of the space
When designing your dream kitchen, you’ll want to maximize the efficiency of the space by eliminating unnecessary steps. For example, cabinets for glassware/dishes should be near your dishwasher to make them easy to put away. You may want to install cabinets near your breakfast nook to store cereal and bowls. Make sure to include a space for your garbage can near your work area.
Give some thought to your island
If you plan to include an island in your dream kitchen, think about the purpose you want it to serve. Do you want your cooktop, sink, or dishwasher there? Do you plan to use that space for eating? The purpose of your island will determine how it fits into your kitchen and how much room you need to get around it.
Allow room to navigate through the space
You must make sure that you have enough room to navigate through the room safely. A 36” path is ideal for most areas, while you’ll need 42” to 48” near the cooking area. If possible, the stove should be kept out of the flow of traffic- especially if you have small children who will be in and out of the kitchen.
Consider your food storage
Make sure that the foods/snacks that you use the most are easily accessible. If you have children who are able to prepare their own food, make sure that they can reach it easily.
Make sure to have enough outlets
One of the biggest complaints that people often have is a lack of electrical outlets- especially in the kitchen. However, when you are designing your dream kitchen, you can make sure to plan for enough outlets. Think about how many small appliances you have and will be using regularly, such as your coffee maker, blender, toaster, etc. You may also want to include USB ports for charging your devices.
